Writing is hard—writers say this all the time, and I think probably only other writers believe it. But it's not nearly as hard, in my experience, as not writing.

I knew the day would come when I would have to write about Dean Smith’s health. I made the decision last fall that I would not be the first one to write about it or talk about it because I felt my understanding of the situation had come about because of Dean’s willingness to cooperate with me on a biography. We had started working on the book last August.

Really sad news about Dean Smith, a man who I revered growing up (and, for the most part, still do). The things he has done not just for Carolina basketball, but for UNC and the Chapel Hill community, are incredible.
